Dolores Del Rio
Dolores Del Rio
I have one fond memory of my childhood; watching my grandfather “watch” classic Mexican Cine-de-Oro films. Back then I didn’t have the attention span to actually follow the entirety of the films, however, there is one black-and-white film whose scenes are still vivid in my mind—Maria Candelaria.
This piece was inspired by the film, “Maria Canderaria,” and it depicts a scene of the famous Mexican actress/singer/ and dancer Dolores Del Rio.
The design was sketched and carved by hand, then printed with traditional oil based printmaking ink onto 100% cotton, acid free paper. This reduction wood block print has a total of 10 layers of ink. Yes, 10. This particular piece has been one of the largest and most time consuming pieces I have created till this day (I created it as an undergrad at the University of Washington). Each piece of paper was soaked before being printed on, therefore there will be folds/creases on the paper (outer edges) —which is part of the process.
Each piece within this variable edition of 9 prints is numbered, titled and signed.
Due to the handmade nature of block printing, each print will be unique and may have beautiful imperfections.
