Calaveritas y Todo lo demás
Calaveritas y Todo lo demás
Calaveritas y Todo lo Demás ( Little skulls and everything else)
This little-long print combines a few things that the Yakima Valley is known for— the apple, hop and cherry industry (just to name a few). And over the last couple of years I have, in turn created a series of prints that capture the harvest process and the Essential workers who help make this happen (check out my essential and hop worker series for more info).
This little—long print combines a little bit of some of the things that I hold dear to my corazón (culture, traditions) as well as the new things (people’s, places) that I continue to learn about/with throughout this journey of mine.
Also, if you’re wondering what the Monarchs represent in these pieces see the info below.
One of the most recognizable symbols of día de Muertos (aside from the Calaveritas and cempasúchil flowers) is the monarch butterfly. Since monarch butterflies migrate south during the winter season (coincides with Día de muertos) some of the indigenous communities in Mexico saw the arrival of the monarchs as a spiritual symbol—representing the souls of their ancestors returning to visit their loved ones.
They believed that human souls did not die, but instead continued to live in Mictlan, a resting place for the souls until the day they could return to visit their relatives—Día de los Muertos.
*Calaveritas y todo lo demás is a print that was created as ONE my annual 2021 Día de muertos prints.
The design was sketched and carved by hand, then printed with traditional oil based printmaking ink onto 100% cotton, acid free paper. Each piece will be titled, signed and labeled as a variable Edition out of 19.
*This block is printed on white Stonehenge 250 gsm paper, and the designs are individually hand painted with watercolor paint.
Each print is produced using a manual printing press, therefore, each print will be unique and may differ slightly from the pictured original. This is the beauty of linoleum block printing.
